Meta Debuts Dedicated ‘Charm’ Device for Using Muse AI

Meta is making a bold move to pull artificial intelligence out of the smartphone screen and put it directly into the palms of users’ hands. In a surprise announcement that caught much of the industry off guard, CEO Mark Zuckerberg took the stage to unveil Charm, a dedicated handheld device designed specifically to house Muse, the company’s rapidly growing AI assistant. The small gadget represents Meta’s latest effort to carve out a permanent space in the burgeoning hardware market for standalone AI tools.

The development of Charm was an intensive collaborative effort between two powerhouses within the organization. It emerged from Meta’s newly established design lab under the leadership of Alan Dye, who previously served as the head of interface design at Apple. By pairing Dye’s eye for intuitive user experience with the technical muscle of Meta’s Superintelligence AI group, the company aims to create a seamless bridge between complex machine learning and everyday human interaction.

While smartphones have long been the primary gateway for digital assistants, Meta seems convinced that consumers want a more focused, tactile way to interact with their AI. By stripping away the distractions of traditional apps and notifications, Charm positions Muse not just as another feature on a phone, but as a constant companion available at a moment’s notice. This pivot suggests that Zuckerberg believes the future of computing lies in specialized peripherals rather than one single multipurpose device.
