The cryptocurrency market showed remarkable resilience on Friday, largely ignoring a massive security breach at Bitget that saw the exchange lose 351.6 million dollars. Attackers managed to compromise a backend system within the platform’s wallet infrastructure and spoofed transaction data to bypass authorization processes. While withdrawals remain suspended pending a full security review, Bitget CEO Gracy Chen calmed investors by stating that private keys were not compromised and that a 464 million dollar protection fund is more than sufficient to cover the losses.
Despite the shock of one of the largest hacks in recent months, investor appetite remains strong as capital rotates away from Bitcoin. After a powerful climb from below 63,000 dollars in August to nearly 87,000 dollars earlier this week, Bitcoin has entered a consolidation phase, trading flat around 84,342 dollars. This stagnation has triggered a classic market cycle shift where traders move their funds into more speculative assets. As a result, altcoins are seeing a significant surge, with an overwhelming majority of the top 100 digital assets posting gains over the last twenty four hours.
This rally is particularly evident in the computing and decentralized finance sectors. Tokens associated with AI and compute power, including Chainlink and Bittensor, helped push the CoinDesk Computing Index up 9.5 percent, while DeFi tokens jumped another 8.7 percent. Other standouts included Quant and Ondo, both of which posted double digit gains during the window. Market analysts suggest that this movement indicates a growing confidence in broader ecosystem utility even when individual platforms face setbacks.
Adding to the optimism is a stabilizing macroeconomic environment following a volatile week globally. Reports that U.S. and Iranian negotiators are discussing the phased reopening of the Strait of Hormuz have eased tensions in energy markets, bringing Brent crude prices back below 100 dollars per barrel. With gold edging higher and the dollar index softening slightly, crypto traders seem emboldened to hold their positions or seek higher returns in mid cap tokens rather than fleeing to safe havens_
