A quiet residential neighborhood in Erie was transformed into a crime scene Friday evening after a mass shooting left eight people dead, including two children. Local authorities responded to reports of gunfire near 7th and Perry Streets around 5 p.m., where witnesses described a man firing a weapon before disappearing into a nearby residence. Upon arrival, officers discovered two women deceased in the street while several other victims were found inside the home.
Police later confirmed that the suspect was also found dead at the scene from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound. While some neighbors reported hearing loud noises during the police response, Chief Rick Lorah clarified that those sounds were flash bang devices used by tactical teams rather than active gunfire. He noted that all fatalities had occurred prior to the arrival of law enforcement and emphasized that there is no remaining threat to the community.
The scale of the violence has left city leaders struggling for words. Mayor Daria Devlin and Governor Josh Shapiro both released statements expressing profound sorrow for the families affected by the massacre, with Shapiro offering his administration’s full support to the grieving city. Despite intense public interest, officials have declined to speculate on a possible motive while investigators work to piece together the events leading up to the attack.
As forensic teams continue to process the scene, the local community remains in shock over the sudden loss of life. The Erie Police Department plans to hold a formal press conference Saturday afternoon to provide further updates as they move forward with their investigation into one of the most devastating tragedies in recent regional history.
