Epic Games Bets Big on AI With New Speed Focused Launcher

Epic Games is rolling out a significant overhaul of its PC games launcher in preview, promising users a faster, more responsive experience that finally brings official support to Linux. While the technical upgrades are notable, the real story lies in how the software was built. In a surprising admission, the company revealed that the refresh was vibe coded, a playful nod to their decision to lean heavily on artificial intelligence rather than traditional manual programming to get the job done.

This shift comes amid a broader corporate transformation led by CEO Tim Sweeney, who recently announced a massive pivot toward AI acceleration across the entire organization. According to Sweeney, the goal isn’t necessarily to reduce headcount but to empower employees to create better products at a higher volume. This philosophy has already begun permeating various projects, including reports that some unannounced titles may eventually abandon handwritten code entirely in favor of AI generated systems.

Martin Keely, vice president and general manager of the store services, explained that AI acted as a primary tool for replicating core functions from the previous launcher and accelerating the transition to Linux. Although Keely clarified that humans still supervised and managed the process—meaning they didn’t just flip a switch and walk away—he noted that AI agents were responsible for writing and reviewing much of the code. For Epic, this project serves as a proof of concept for their wider strategy of integrating machine learning into every facet of game development.

The updated launcher is available starting today for Windows, Mac, and Linux users, coinciding with plans to bring Fortnite to Linux via the application. While Epic intends to keep the legacy version active for now until the new iteration reaches total stability and feature parity, it is clear where their priorities lie. Despite recent layoffs earlier this year which Sweeney insists were unrelated to automation, Epic sees this high speed development cycle as a glimpse into a future where AI defines how gaming software is delivered.
