Other contenders struggled to find their rhythm on the tight Madrid streets where runoff areas are scarce and mistakes are costly. Max Verstappen expressed frustration with his Red Bull steering feeling unexpectedly heavy, leaving him sixth on the leaderboard. Even local hero Fernando Alonso faced challenges, including traffic jams on track that led to some animated gestures toward fellow drivers.
