Federal Lawsuit Targets Alaska Vote Certification Over Name Confusion Dispute

The Justice Department has launched a high stakes legal battle against Alaska election officials, seeking to prevent the certification of the upcoming U.S. Senate race unless incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan emerges victorious. In filings submitted to federal court, government lawyers argue that the presence of another candidate named Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. on the ballot creates a dangerous level of voter confusion that could inadvertently strip the sitting senator of his seat.

President Donald Trump took direct credit for the litigation, telling reporters that he personally ordered the suit because he views the junior Sullivan’s candidacy as a disgrace and a calculated attempt to cheat. The administration is asking for a court order to block certification if Senator Sullivan loses but would have won had the votes cast for his namesake been credited to him under Alaska’s ranked choice voting system.

Democratic nominee Mary Peltola has condemned the move as an act of corruption, suggesting that the senator is leveraging powerful allies in Washington to cling to power regardless of the voters’ will. While Attorney General Todd Blanche insisted that the department does not intend to improperly interfere with state processes, critics and legal experts describe the intervention as unprecedented, noting that federal authorities typically lack the jurisdiction to dictate how states certify their own elections.

The conflict stems from a long running dispute over Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., a former teacher who insists his candidacy is legitimate despite accusations from Republicans that he is a Democratic plant designed to siphon votes. Although Alaska courts previously allowed him to remain on the ballot, current ballots distinguish between the two men by listing Senator Sullivan as a registered Republican and incumbent, while providing no party affiliation for his counterpart.
